Last season’s champions were the Denver Nuggets. Because they were the champions. But there’s another team that deserves to be mentioned. It’s Miami.
After a roller-coaster regular season, the Heat punched their ticket to the playoffs with the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference. Their first-round opponent is the top-seeded Milwaukee Bucks. Most expected Miami to be eliminated. However, the Heat easily completed the upset with a 4-1 series win.
Miami’s run wasn’t over. The Heat swept the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics to reach the Finals. In the Finals, they fell to Denver. But many applauded Miami’s eighth-seeded miracle.
Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, and the rest of the role players under Spoelstra’s watchful eye.
There was even some good news this offseason. Portland Trail Blazers ace Damian Lillard wanted to join Miami, but trade talks between Miami and Portland have stalled.
Spoelstra isn’t fazed.
“We’re in the final stages of building our roster for next season,” Spoelstra said. We’re bringing in role players. They will become the core. I’m happy with the current squad. I feel like we’ve made some great additions.”
Miami parted ways with Gabe Vincent, Max Struth, and Cody Zeller this offseason. Josh Richardson and Thomas Bryant will fill their shoes.
The NBA is a league where anything can happen, which means Lillard could end up in Miami. However, time is not on Lillard’s side. It will be interesting to see which jersey Lillard will wear next season.
