Seoul SK defeated Anyang Jungkwanjang 89-74 in the opening game of the 2023-2024 Jungkwanjang Professional Basketball League at Anyang Gymnasium on Nov. 21.
Jamil Warney (46 points, 11 rebounds) put on a one-man show to lead the way in the victory, while new SK signing Oh Se-geun (8 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists) also made his presence felt. SK started the new season on a high note, avenging last season’s championship game loss.
After falling behind 19-22 in the first quarter, SK fought back in the second. Warney scored back-to-back baskets from under the basket, while Gomez Del Riano and Song Chang-yong provided support. Jeong Kwan-jang answered back with Lens Abando, but this time, Oh Se-geun and Leon Williams found their way to the basket. After a three-pointer from Gomez, SK went into the half with a 48-41 lead.
However, they struggled to keep up in the second half. They gave up back-to-back baskets to Duvan Maxwell and points to Lee Jong-hyun and Abando. Warney continued his scoring streak, but SK had no support from the rest of the team. At the end of the quarter, Choi Sung-won and Daryl Monroe hit outside shots. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 67-65, a narrow lead for SK.
At the crunch time, SK had Warney. Warney scored nine points in an instant, including a three-pointer, to bring the momentum back to SK’s side. Afterward, Lee Jong-hyun gave up back-to-back baskets, but the team didn’t falter. Oh Se-geun and Kim Sun-hyung added more points to complete the comeback. With Warney’s outside shot driving a wedge, SK celebrated the victory.
Meanwhile, Jung Kwan-jang was led by Monroe (21 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists) and Abando (12 points, 5 rebounds). However, the team was missing a number of injured players, including Omari Spellman and Jung Hyo-geun.
